5 LIES ABOUT SUGAR…AND SOME BITTER TRUTHS!

lies about sugar

In this short post, I would outline 5 common lies about sugar that I frequently hear. You won’t believe your ears (or eyes…or tongue!)

Lie #1: Diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar.

Truth: This is not exactly true. Consuming plenty of sugar can only worsen the condition of an already diabetic person; it doesn’t directly cause it. However, eating too much sugar has been linked to obesity, which predisposes one to diabetes.  But, no, consuming sugar doesn’t directly cause diabetes!

Lie #2: Honey is a healthier and safer replacement for sugar.

Truth: Don’t mind them! They glorify honey as a powerful medicinal stuff. There’s nothing magical or special in it to make you replace sugar with it! Too much sugar causes tooth decay and obesity, and so does too much honey! Whatever you are running away from in sugar is right there in honey!  Honey contains sugar!  Taste both and see, if you still don’t believe me!

Lie #3: Sugar is not good for babies and children.

Truth: Says who?!  Even breast milk contains complex sugars that babies can hardly digest; yet these complex sugars are harmless to babies! Children need sugar. And no, it doesn’t cause “jedi jedi”. It doesn’t make a child stubborn or  hyperactive! It doesn’t make a child prone to stealing! My God! Where did we get all these theories?!

Lie #4: Sugar causes low libido, erection problems, and poor sexual performance.

Truth: Na wa o! And some people will add watery sperm, quick ejaculation, and so on, to the list. And they prescribe all sort of bitter concoction as remedy. To cut a long story short, sugar consumption has nothing to do with all these. Sugar is not guilty! Though some diabetics have sexual problems due to high blood sugar, it is not the same with non-diabetics.

Lie #5: It is not good for a pregnant or breast-feeding mother to consume sugar.

Truth: Kai! Okay now, why is it not good? None of that comes out through the milk to the baby, and wait…what if it does? Who says babies hate sugar? That reminds me: pregnant and nursing mothers can eat ANY food other humans eat. Every food. Don’t let these greedy men corner you!

Too much of anything, even sugar, is bad. It’s true. Be careful. But, let’s learn to know what is a sweet lie… and the bitter truth.
